[Invited Talk] A corpus-linguistic analysis of spoken dialogs -- From the viewpoint of the cognition-interaction trade-off --
Yasuharu Den (Chiba Univ.) HCS2016-34
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In communication, speakers are involved in both cognitive and interactive processes—planning utterances in real time, while sending out messages in a timely fashion. They are always faced with a trade-off between the two processes, which we call the cognition–interaction trade-off. In this paper, we elucidate how speakers address this problem, based on a corpus-linguistic analysis of spoken dialogs, which utilizes detailed annotations and well-suited statistical models. In particular, we focus on the construction of utterance beginnings, and demonstrate some strategies for speakers to cope with the cognition–interaction trade-off.
