[Special Invited Talk] Antenna miniaturization and its Impact on the communication quality

(in English) Antennas are basic elements in wireless communication systems, transmitting and receiving radio frequency signal over the air. Geometry and material of antennas characterize the performance, which is given by soling Maxwell’s equations. Two major parameters in antennas are radiation pattern and input impedance. The former is the angular dependence of the strength of electromagnetic waves from the antenna and the latter is used as a measure of impedance matching between the antenna and radio equipment. This article focuses on small antennas on small antennas and its impact on the communication quality based on the discussion using a factor of minimum antenna Q, defined by the ratio between stored energy and loss in the antenna or the frequency characteristics of antenna input impedance. This article discusses the Q factor and radiation efficiency of antenna to determine SN ratio in communication systems. Another figure of merit in multi-antenna systems is correlation and its impact on MIMO terminal antennas is also discussed by two-antenna model.
