Analysis of cavitation bubbles generated by high-intensity focused ultrasound in biological tissue using high-speed optical and acoustic imaging

(in English) High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment is a noninvasive method, in which ultrasound is generated outside the body and focused onto a target tissue to be thermally coagulated. Acoustic cavitation bubbles are being studied to provide a high efficiency in HIFU treatment. However, the behavior of cavitation bubbles in a biological tissue remains unclear because it is difficult to observe cavitation bubbles by the conventional high-speed photography using back light module. In this study, we simultaneously observed cavitation behavior by two methods, high-speed photography using light scattering and high-speed ultrasonic imaging. The result from both methods showed good agreement.
