Study on speech transmission index using models of modulation transfer function
Yuta Kashihara, Masashi Unoki (JAIST) EA2016-33
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Room impluse response (RIR) is composed of three parts: direct sound, early reverberation, and late reverberation.
It is known that speech transmission index (STI) is affected by late reverberation.
However, it is still unclear how does late reverberation affect STI.
This paper investigated relationship between late reverberation and STI, focused on modulation transfer function (MTF) corresponding to late reverberation using the following five RIR models: single echo, Schroeder RIR, generalized RIR, direct sound with late reverberation of Schroeder RIR, and direct sound with late reverberation of generalized RIR.
As results, it was found that two parameters of RIR, $b$ and $T_R$, can control low-pass characteristics of MTF, where $b$ is the order of RIR and $T_R$ is reverberation time.
It was also found that a parameter $tau$ can control band-elimination characteristics, where $tau$ is delay time.
These results revealed that STI can be controlled as minimization and maximization by using these parameters.
