Tokyo Institute of Technology is promoting millimeter-wave (mmWave) heterogeneous network (HetNet) as an advanced architecture for future cellular communication systems. In this paper, by introducing research achievements from our several research projects on mmWave HetNet, we aim to point out technical challenges to realize mmWave heterogeneous networks in 5G cellular communication systems from many aspects inlcuding 5G eco-system, RFIC and frequency bands, antenna and propagation, mmWave access scheme, backhaul and fronthaul, and also MEC and NFV. |
