Development of an Automatic Attendance Confirmation System using a Beacon and Student Smartphones in the Classroom

(in English) The electronic roll book system "iRollBook" has been in operation from 2010 at the National Institute of Technology, Kochi College. In this study, we developed an automatic attendance confirmation system called “QuickAttend". It has the function to register the student attendance information to the iRollBook system automatically by using a Beacon and students’ smartphones in the classroom. We have confirmed the usefulness of QuickAttend in a real classroom environment. The experimental results show a success rate of detecting student attendance to be 100% using plural beacon radio signals and iOS smartphones. However, in the case of Android smartphones, the success rate is not perfect because of different responses of Android smartphones to the Beacon signal. We are planning to update the application software to increase the number of applicable Android smartphones by changing the library software.
