Few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (FM-EDFAs) have been addressed for efficient optical signal amplification in mode-division multiplexed transmission systems because FM-EDFAs make it possible to amplify mode-multiplexed signals in a lump. In a FM-EDFA, suppression of gain dependence not only on wavelengths but also on modes is necessary. For minimizing differential mode gain (DMG), methods using higher-order modes for pumping light or shaping erbium-doped area into a ring have been reported. We have proposed a method for DMG minimization by expanding an erbium-doped area to the outside of the core. In this paper, we experimentally evaluate gain characteristics of a cladding-pumped six-mode EDFA with a large erbium-doped area. |
