[Special Talk] Utilization of electromagnetic waves in whale resources survey and research

(in English) Whales belong to order Cetacea. Extant whales are divided into two suborders: Mysticeti (baleen whales) and Odontoceti (toothed whales). Recently, order Cetartiodactyla which includes whales and even-toed ungulate is proposed as they are closely related. Four types of whaling are conducted in Japan: special permit whaling, small-type whaling, harpoon fishery and drive fishery. Whales also provide us other values such as recreation through whale watching. Various types of surveys and analyses are conducted for sustainable use of whale resources. Electromagnetic waves are used to track movement of whales by using satellite monitoring tags and to study whale habitat by using environmental data obtained by satellites. More recently, whale counting by using visual image taken by satellites and applications of unmanned aerial vehicles for surveys are attempted.
