Recently, there have been worldwide attempts to simulate the whole brain activities with software on a super computer, and to realize an elaborated brain-inspired computer hardware system. In particular, a micro-semiconductor fabrication of large-scale brain-like computing hardware has been fueled by accumulated knowledge about the brain network obtained through novel brain activity measurement technologies, and by low-power nano-scale semiconductor integrated circuit technologies. However, these brain-inspired architectures, which try to approach the brain in performance using a non von Neumann architecture, are not fully established yet lacking a) brain-like information representation (coding) and integrated processing/memory/learning, b) complex dynamics including diversity and integration of information, c) the embodiment (a sense of body), and a mutual interaction with environment, d) emotion, feeling, and consciousness, and e) a fast global control of the system state. On the other hand, the brain science is revealing the secret of high-level processing in the brain such as conscious and sub-conscious processes. In this talk, I will introduce a “Whole Organism Computing” paradigm, which exploits bodily constrains and use the homeostasis as so called referenced self, in order to make novel brain-inspired computational hardware. In this paradigm, an automatic, but fast and high-performance sub-conscious process is especially important. Therefore, I also introduce a conscious/sub-conscious hybrid computing hardware system, in which a serial conscious process (algorithm) and highly-parallel sub-conscious processes (high-dimensional complex dynamics) mutually support each other to improve its computational performance such as speed, quality and robustness. |
