Network Coding in Store-carry-forward routing for file transfer across multiple islands

(in English) Store carry and forward (SCF) routing-based large content delivery across multiple islands is studied. In particular, we investigate the effectiveness of the random linear network coding (RLNC) combined with the epidemic routing (ER) in a simple scenario, where a large file is divided into many messages delivered from a stationary source node in an island to a stationary destination in another island being relayed by car and ferry boat. ER is known to perform best in both reliability and delay of delivery without any global information when the network resources are sufficient. However, this is not the case in our scenario. Applying RLNC is expected to improve the delivery delay performance by avoiding a number of identical messages distributed that consume the scarce resources in ER. However, RLNC may distribute a number of different but linearly dependent messages that also consume the scarce resources. Therefore, we propose a method to improve ER based on RLNC, in which linearly dependent messages are detected and deleted. The network simulation results showed the effectiveness of the proposed method especially when the number of messages exchanged between contacted nodes is small.
