High Performance DOA Estimation Method for Copime Arrays and Nested Arrays

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, we consider a coprime array or nested array. Pal et al. have proposed a method to extend these arrays to a larger virtual array and implemented the spatial smoothing technique to make the covariance matrix of a virtual uniform linear array (ULA), hence the MUSIC, ESPRIT algorithms can be applied to detect more sources than the number of array elements. However, in Pal's method, since the full information of received signals of the covariance matrix is not used, the performance of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation may be limited in some scenarios. On the other hand, the application of the spatial smoothing increases the computational burden rapidly when the number of subarray elements increases. By exploiting the full information of the observation vector obtained by vectorizing the covariance matrix of received signals of the original array, and using Toeplitz matrix to form the covariance matrix of the virtual ULA, we propose a high performance DOA estimation method. It is shown by computer simulations that the proposed method has better estimation accuracy and lower computational complexity than the Pal's method.
