Note on RAID Reliability Improvements Based on Preventive Safety and Desynchronization of Operation Start Time

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) RAID (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive (Independent) Disks) is well known and commonly used to improve reliability of data kept in HDDs. Ageing of HDDs is considered as one of major factors which degrades reliability of entire RAID system. Recently survey based on analysis of time-to-failures of many HDDs has reported that HDD failures seldom occur within first 1 year, and then failure rates gradually increase. Taking this tendency of failures into account, in this paper we discuss reliability improvement strategies of RAID systems. We first propose preventive-safety-RAID based on replacements of non-faulty HDDs, evaluating its system reliability, mean-time-to-data-loss (MTTDL), and cost-performance. Aiming to cost reduction, we then evaluate effectiveness of a RAID system based on desynchronization of operation start time of each HDD. We use simulations for two different desynchronization patterns, showing that MTTDL can be improved in comparison to the case where all HDDs are used in the same time.
