A consideration on throughput improvement of p-persistent CSMA/CA
Yukiko Kan, Hiroshi Inai (Okayama Pref Univ) NS2016-140
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wireless LANs adopt the CSMA/CA as their random access method.
Although the CSMA/CA has a collision avoidance mechanism, the collision probability becomes high according to increase of competing terminals.
To reduce the collision probability in such circumstances, the p-persistent CSMA/CA has been introduced.
Under employment of the p-persistent CSMA/CA, upon being ready for transmission, a terminal sends a packet with probability p, otherwise it suspends the transmission.
In principle an optimal p maximizing the throughput can be calculated from the packet length and the number of competing terminals.
However since the number of competing terminals is hard to grasp in practice, an estimation mechanism is required.
Previously proposed mechanisms gradually decrease the estimated number of competing terminals from the maximum number (all the terminals) to one.
Due to the gradually decrease, in cases of a small number of competing terminals, they decrease the throughput.
In this paper, we propose an estimation mechanism which works well in such cases.
