Consideration of effects of a core location on bend losses in a buried waveguide

(in English) This paper describes the effects of a core depth on the pure bend loss in a buried waveguide whose core is placed near an air-cladding interface. The eigenmode analysis of a straight waveguide shows that the field extends as the distance between the core and the air region is decreased. Since the extended field is liable to be transformed into a leaky wave when the waveguide is bent, the pure bend loss may increase as the core location approaches the air-cladding interface. On the other hand, the eigenmode field of a bent waveguide reveals that the field is formed depending on the phase relation between the original and folded waves at the air-cladding interface, leading to reduction of the pure bend loss. As a result, the opposite effects occur, which are caused by the appearance and disappearance of the leaky wave as a function of core depth, so that there exists a core location where the total pure bend loss is minimized. Finally, to confine the field to the core and suppress a leaky wave near the air-cladding interface, we propose a new technique based on the introduction of a partial over-cladding layer. The present structure reduces not only the pure bend loss but also the polarization dependent loss over a wide spectral range.
