Natural plastic homogeneous spherical lenses give adequate performance up to radii of 5 free space wavelengths (27dBi). Higher gain requires larger lens radii, and multiple layer lenses were designed using optimization software, which maintained aperture efficiencies better than 50%. Realization of the unique relative permittivity of lens layers as radial effective media drilled from a single billet of natural plastic is attractive for small volume manufacture using multi-axis milling machine. An 8 wavelength radius prototype radial effective media lens for satellite-on-the-move across 10.5 to 12.5GHz is analysed in detail. |
