For mass screening of bone, the Quantitative UltraSound (QUS) is more suitable than the X-ray method. In this study, to understand the Axial Transmission (AT) technique which can evaluate the cortical bone in vivo, ultrasound propagation in the heterogeneous cortical bone was studied. First, the longitudinal wave velocity distribution in a bovine radius was experimentally measured. Second, applying the bilinear interpolation and the piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating method to the distribution, a 3D heterogeneous cortical bone model was constructed. Third, assuming bone has uniaxial anisotropy, distributions of all elastic moduli were estimated. Finally, using the elastic finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, the axial ultrasound propagation in the 3D heterogeneous model was simulated to understand the wave propagation in the osteoporotic bone. |
