The noninvasive and quantitative diagnosis method of skin ulcer is strongly required in medical filed. One of the key topics for this occur is the tissue characterization by ultrasound. In this study, we evaluated the echo signal analysis method for the basis of quantitative ultrasound diagnosis. To evaluate the scattering characteristics in skin ulcer tissues, the amplitude envelope distribution of the backscattered RF echo signal was modeled using statistical distributions considered a scattering in a biological tissue. Moreover, we observed the histopathological image to understand the difference of the histological structure between noninfection and infection tissues. The RF echo signals were acquired using a clinical ultrasonic diagnostic system with a linear phased array transducer those center frequency is 8.9 MHz, and were measured from three skin ulcer models in rats (noninfection, superficial infection, and deep infection model). Firstly, the goodness-of-fit was calculated between the amplitude envelope distribution of measured and of computed data. Thus, we confirmed the most suitable statistical distribution for modeling the echo signals from skin ulcers. Additionally, the difference between noninfection and infection tissues was indicated characterizing the parameter of the above statistical distribution. In result, the statistical distribution parameter related with the coherent signal power was shown only in the infection model rats. Moreover, the spatial distribution of the parameter was matched the feature of the corresponding pathological image. |
