Recently, clean slate approach which aims at redesign of the Internet has been popular. As one of clean slate approaches, we propose a six-layer network architecture called ZNA (Z Network Architecture). This architecture provides sophisticated communication services such as bandwidth aggregation and fault tolerant. ZNA introduces ``temporally-spliced path'' as a model of DTN (Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network), which temporarily buffers transmission data in intermediate nodes. However, it has not yet been designed and implemented. In this paper, we focus on the ``temporally-spliced path'' and propose an expansion of Layer-5. This extension enables applications to perform reliable transmission even in a bad communication environment such as extremely long communication delay time, frequent packet losses and intermittent communication link. Moreover, feedback function of communication quality which is not considered in the design of existing DTN technologies is incorporated in Layer-5 and improves usability of DTN applications. As a result, usability improvement of DTN applications has been realized. The extension part of Layer-5 is implemented in the user space and realizes a transmission mechanism considering DTN. In addition, evaluation shows that temporally-spliced path works correctly and can be provided to applications with low overhead. |
