Ultrasound irradiation to titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspension generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) which is expected to be applied for cancer therapy and infection prevention. To optimize conditions for application, mechanism of hydroxyl radical (OH·) generation is required to be elucidated. In this study, low-intensity focused ultrasound was irradiated to suspensions of TiO2 (anatase and rutile types) and Al2O3, respectively. As a result, OH· generation was confirmed in all suspensions. The results suggested that lowering of the cavitation threshold is the main cause of ROS generation, and that other particles than TiO2 also might be useful for medical application. |
