Estimation Scheme of Path Utilization to Delay Segment Transmission and Increase Window size for Energy-aware TCP

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, the amount of power consumption by network equipments is rapidly increasing with the growth of Internet,so that network greening becomes the important issue. One of the power-saving scheme of network equipments is to control link transmission rate dynamically according to the amount of traffic on them since power consumption is in proportion to the preset transmission rate of network equipments. For TCP traffic, due to its feedback flow control and burst transmission of data segments, the transmission rate of some power-saving equipment should be reduced during its idle time. For effectively aggregating the idle time for power saving, the delaying segment transmission and increasing window size method have been proposed.Although in this method, both power-saving and transmission performance are dependent on the utilization of the power-saving links/path,the effectiveness is shown by assuming TCP source hosts know the utilization of it just when segment transmission. Therefore, in this paper,we propose the energy-aware TCP in which source hosts roughly estimate its path utilization by using their own transmission status of TCP and delay segment transmission/increase window size according to it.
