The face is one of the most significant social stimuli, and thus is very important for communication in virtual reality. The current study focused on how the orientations of the face guided people's attention and how and where such face-guided attention is processed in the brain. To this end, we conducted human neuroimaging experiment with MEG (Elekta Neuromag 360 channels). The MEG source estimation and temporal time series analysis revealed that the face elicited stronger and faster signals on V1 in the presenting period and hMT+ in the rotating period than its non-biological counterparts (3D arrows whose luminance magnitudes were carefully adjusted so as to be equivalent with face stimuli). Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS) was activated in the both periods with different pattern. In addition, we found that the posterior STS plays an important role in decoding the directions of both the faces and the 3D arrows. |
