An analysis of finger movements in piano playing using a high-speed visual tracking system

(in English) Piano performance is achieved by fast and complex finger movements. Detailed examination of these movements is useful not only for clarifying the mechanism of this complex motor skill, but also for assisting the training and education of this skill. Making use of the high-speed visual tracking technology, we built a high-speed video recording system, which continuously tracked the hand movement and recorded the detailed finger movements in piano playing. We recorded the performance of seven professional pianists playing a dozen of short musical pieces, and examined features of their hand/finger movements. Here, we report the outline of this video-recoding system, and some preliminary findings obtained by the examination.
