Experimental evaluation of voluntarily activatable muscle synergies

(in English) This study tested hypothesis that the individual muscle synergies extracted by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is voluntarily activatable. Subjects performed isometric force production task, and their 13 muscle activity patterns were measured. We extracted the muscle synergies with different sparsity through NMF with the different numbers of muscle synergies. We defined a conventional muscle synergy which was extracted based on the variability accounted for (VAF) and the coefficient of determination (CD), and on the index one more than VAF or CD. We also defined a extended muscle synergy that was sparser than the conventional muscle synergy. We calculated the index which reflected a parallelism between tested one muscle synergy vector and current muscle activation vector of subject. Subjects were visually feed backed calculated index, and tried to activate the individual muscle synergy. As a result, average of 90.8% of the muscle synergy extracted by the VAF was significantly activated. However, a rate of activatable muscle synergies of the other conventional muscle synergies was lower. Moreover, average of 25.5% of the extended muscle synergy was significantly activatable. Therefore, our results partly support the hypothesis, and indicate that the appropriate index can estimate voluntarily activatable muscle synergies through NMF. Moreover, it is suggested that the CNS can use extended muscle synergies to perform voluntary movements.
