Variations of Ku-band satellite signal level with periods from a few to a few ten minutes caused by tropospheric scintillation in clear sky conditions are investigated using BS (Broadcasting Satellite) signal (11.84GHz, EL=41.4°right-hand circular polarization) observed at 1 sec interval in Osaka Electro-Communication University, Neyagawa, Osaka, for the past seven years from 2010 to 2016. The results are compared with cumulative time percentages of attenuation due to tropospheric scintillation predicted by the recent ITU-R recommendations. In summertime, the cumulative time percentages of BS signal level variations primarily caused by atmospheric convection agree well with the ITU-R predictions based on propagation-path elevation angle, frequency, antenna diameter, and monthly average ground temperature. In winter and early spring from January to March, however, variations considerably larger than the ITU-R predictions are often detected depending on observation years, although the cumulative time percentages are small. These variations are possibly related to stratiform turbulence due to enhancement of jet stream and wintertime monsoon other than convection. These features should be further investigated by direct measurement of turbulent structures using MU radar and Boundary Layer radars in near locations. |
