In forthcoming fifth-generation (5G) radio access networks, Radio Access Technology (RAT) or cell layer, which represents specific mobile communication system with specific frequency bands, with different frequency bands with various signal bandwidths will be overlaid on each other. Under this deployment, the one of key factors for improvement of high-speed transmission and capacity enhancement of wireless resource is effective utilization of small cells and spot cells which use high frequency band such as Super High Frequency (SHF) or Extremely High Frequency (EHF). However, frequent handovers across cell layers or within the cell layer will be occurred in the deployment if the conventional handover scheme is applied. Especially in actual metropolitan environments, due to distortion of radio propagation by these buildings, there is possibility that users select a cell which locates in opposite side of user's moving direction for connection. This phenomenon increases the number of handovers in addition to the issue described above. Therefore, we propose handover scheme considering both user's moving direction and locations of base stations. Moreover, the number of handovers and the average flow time characteristics are evaluated by system level simulations and verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in this paper. |
