A consideration on frequency control of varactor-loaded single-layer ring microstrip antennas with reduced bias circuits

(in English) This paper presents reduced bias circuit designs of frequency-tunable ring microstrip antennas with varactor diodes. Two varactor diodes are mounted on square ring patch antenna fed by an L-probe to realize a frequency-tunable microstrip antenna. Resonant frequency of the proposed antenna can be controlled by the DC bias voltage applied to the varactor diodes. In order to design a frequency-tunable multiband microstrip antenna with multiple ring patches, reduction of the bias circuits is important. In this paper, the bias circuit for negative bias terminal of the frequency-tunable ring microstrip antenna is replaced with a via shorting the ring patch to ground plane at the zero-voltage plane. Furthermore, upper half area of the ring patch can be removed with the via to miniaturize the ring microstrip antenna. The fractional bandwidths of the frequency-tunable range of the reduced bias circuit design and the miniaturized design are measured to be around 10% and 5% under the condition of over 3 dBi gain and the reflection less than –10 dB, respectively.
