A prototype of Dimmable Visible Light Communication System on FPGA

(in English) Visible Light Communication (VLC) which provides both illumination and communication service has attracted increasing attention in short-range wireless communication technology. One of main challenges is dimming support that provides power savings, moods, and the aesthetic value of the place using this technology for illumination purpose. In this paper, we develop a prototype of dimmable VLC system running on FPGA. Prototype system uses 4B/6B coding and Dimming Compensator blocks to generate data that meets different dimming requirements. We also use On-Off Key modulation (OOK) to transmit data through VLC front-end circuits. This system is primarily developed to evaluate the quality of the off-the-shelf, low-cost VLC front-ends, different dimming levels and transmission distances.
