Effect of ghrelin injection into rat lateral ventricle on the sleep-wake behavior

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Regulation of sleep-wake behavior is one of the important physiological functions in the central nervous system. Ghrelin, an endogenous peptide, has been shown to be involved in the regulation, but its mechanism in the brain has not been clarified. To elucidate this, we set up the conventional experimental environment. As a pilot study, the present study was conducted to observe effect of ghrelin on the sleep-wake behavior, Szentirmai et al. demonstrated. The results suggest that ghrelin injection into the cerebral ventricle reduced sleep and enhanced wakefulness, and the effect lasted more than an hour after the injection. Present study demonstrated that ghrelin has a wake-promoting function in the brain as shown in the previous study.
