Microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) was investigated using a planar write head and exchange-coupled composite (ECC) media. In the presence of a high frequency (HF) field, hysteresis loop calculations show that it is possible to reverse the magnetisation of an ECC grain before the DC field reaches zero, i.e. the switching field of the grain becomes negative. A similar effect is found when recording on ECC media using a planar head field distribution and the HF field generated by a spin torque oscillator (STO). It is possible to switch the media magnetisation into the opposite direction to the head field. The conditions for realising this effect will be discussed. |
