Iterative Decoding between Carrier Phase Estimator and FEC Decoder for Optical High-Order QAM Signals

(in English) Optical high-order QAM signals are more sensitive to phase noise in coherent detection. In order to compensate for the phase noise, digital carrier phase estimation schemes by digital signal processing in the receiver have been intensively proposed. Note that the phase noise cannot be completely compensated due to large additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) at the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. The residual phase noise causes the excess continuous errors. Considering that forward error correction (FEC) is usually introduced at the low SNR region, and the excess continuous errors degrade the bit error ratio (BER) performance of the following FEC, which is called post-FEC BER performance. In this paper, we introduce iterative decoding between a carrier-phase estimator and an FEC decoder to compensate for the excess continuous errors. We numerically and experimentally evaluate the performance of iterative decoding for 20%-overhead coded 16QAM signals. The results suggest that the iterative decoding is effective for improving the post-FEC BER performance of 16QAM signals impaired by phase noise with AWGN.
