Wavelength-reuse is a technique for WDM-PON that realizes color-less optical network units (ONUs), where the downstream signal light is used as a seed light of the upstream signal. The authors have proposed a wavelength-reuse technique utilizing a Fabry-Perot ethalon (FP) and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), where the FP and the SOA are used for suppressing high and low frequency components, respectively. In this paper, we report our experiments on bi-directional transmission featuring the proposed technique. For data suppression at the ONU, FP with a bandwidth of 1.5 GHz full-width at half maximum and two commercially available SOAs were employed. The experiments revealed that the quality of the upstream signal severely depended both on the extinction ratio of the downstream signal and on the received optical power at the ONU: the more extinction ratio of the downstream signal, or the lower the received power at the ONU, the floor of the bit-error-rate (BER) curve of the upstream signal become more obvious at the optical line terminal (OLT). Too large extinction ratio in the downstream signal made the system impractical for a reasonable transmission power level. |
