A Study on Frame-level Delta-QP Control for 360°VR Video

(in English) $360^circ$ virtual reality experience recently becomes very poplar due to low-cost equipment of head-mount display. In this manuscript, we propose a coding control method to reduce bandwidth without sacrificing the coded image quality. A target is an equirectangular projection format with a traditional 2D video coding. Firstly, an objective quality criteria based on the sphere projection is introduced. A quantization step control is then proposed such that step size becomes wider where area is enlarged in the equirectangular format. Furthermore, a subjective evaluation condition is considered based on the expert viewing procedure. The proposed method is implemented on the x264, which is one of the open-source-software encoders. Experimental results shows that the 5.27% BD-rate reduction (performance improvement) is conformed in average of 10 sequences.
