It is expected that, in a few years, many vehicles will always be connected to the ICT infrastructure and each car acts as an ICT device which transmits data streams produced by its sensors and on-board cameras. The volume of such type of data will be huge, especially that from the on-board cameras. This type of data may consume a lot of network bandwidth. This paper proposes a method of reducing video traffic by using edge computing, where computing resources are placed close to the end-user on the carrier network. In the proposed method, the video data of on-board cameras are not sent to cloud servers, but processed on the edge server on the communication path. We evaluated the proposed method by using video recordings taken with the drive recorder. In this study, we confirmed that the proposed method was able to reduce video traffic by 99.46%. We also did a computer simulation by using an actual urban transport network, and confirmed that the proposed method was able to reduce video traffic on mobile network significantly. |
