In recent years, the controller area networks (CANs), the industry standard of in-vehicle network protocol, have continued to lose its reliability due to high electromagnetic noise caused by miniaturized inverter circuits.
Nakamura et al. proposed the hybrid communication protocol, consisting of automatic repeat request (ARQ) and forward error correction (FEC), as a high reliability method.
In this paper, we use discrete time Markov chain to analyze the reliability of this protocol.
We describe a fault model in which frame error rate (FER) depends on the value of transmit error counter (TEC).
We represent the value of TEC as states of discrete time Markov chain and FER as its transition probability.
By numerical calculation, we show that the average time until transition to the HALT mode in the hybrid communication protocol is longer than one in standard CAN protocol.
We also argue that the average number of data frames lost before transmitting to the HALT mode caused by FEC mode depends largely on the timing of transition to the FEC mode, FER, and the length of parity group.
Therefore, when the average number is large, some measures are required. |
