Noninvasive monitoring of the intracranial pressure (ICP) via the auditory system is theoretically possible because changes in ICP transfer to the inner ear through connections between the cerebral spinal fluid and the cochlear fluids. This paper investigated whether ICP can be assessed by measuring infrasonic emissions from the tympanic membrane for human. The relation between volume and pressure within the cranium is non-linear. The pulse waveform has several harmonic components; the fundamental component has a frequency equal to the heart rate. The amplitude distortion is very useful for the evaluation of various independent factors. As the result of our own discrimination analysis, (a) the presence of a critical ICP value has become clear, the critical ICP is 55 cmH2O. (b) The percentage of correct answers whether is higher than the critical value or lower is 100 %. |
