With the recent development of integration technology, neural prosthetic treatments for various brain dysfunctions with electronic devices have been considered to become a reality. We have been conducting researches on the visual prosthesis with intra-cortical micro-stimulation, which gives electrical pattern stimulation to the cerebral visual cortex of the patients with acquired blindness to artificially induce the perception of light spots patterns. In late 1960s, indeed, chronic clinical trials of a visual prosthesis with cortical surface stimulation were conducted. However, the stimulus current of milli-ampere order, and the stimulating electrode of milli-meter size, used in such a surface type presented various limitations of safety and technical problems, and thus of realizing a prosthetic vision. In the 1990's, a possible usefulness of the intra-cortical micro-stimulation with the stimulus current of micro-ampere order, and needle-shaped micron-sized electrodes inserted in the cerebral cortex, was demonstrated by animal experiments and a few clinical trials, although this type of prosthesis also facing many challenges. Recently, we have developed a prototype of the electronic device system that enables multi-site microstimulation of more than 1000 channels and operation by wireless power/signal transmission. This system is very practical enough to meet the quantitative specification required for intra-cortical micro-stimulation, and is extremely useful for preclinical experimental studies with experimental animals. In this presentation, I would like to introduce the system development and basic research with the physiological experiments. |
