Although recent developments of electrical devices enable us to use wearable and high-quality interfaces for auditory and visual information, tactile information is still limited to be used except simple vibration widely used in mobile phones or game interfaces. Specifically producing directional force generally requires some fulcrum by which reaction force need to be supported, so the force display device cannot be easily mobilized. Therefore, most of the force display devices in virtual reality, such as link-driven or wire-driven robots, are mounted on the base which can support the reaction force. In contrast, it has been known that asymmetric vibration can elicit illusory perception of tangential continuous force. Recently, we have succeeded in dramatically reducing size and weight of the device based on the spatial and temporal characteristics of cutaneous receptors unveiled in the psychophysics and neuroscience. In this talk, I will first introduce cutaneous sensory processing mechanisms and then a new mobile force display device which can induce an illusory sensation of being pulled or pushed by asymmetric vibration in multiple degrees-of-freedom without grounding. Mobile force display with multiple-degree-of-freedom would incredibly enhance applications in virtual reality and tele-communication. I will also showcase a VR game and pedestrian tactile-navigation as application examples of the new force display devices. |
