Recently, an importance of optical attenuator has increased in fiber optic communication systems because an optical power in fiber becomes higher due to a channel increment in wavelength division multiplexing. A photonic crystal fiber (PCF) optical attenuator with air hole diameter decrement is fabricated by heat and fusion, and has a high power resistance and a low dependence of attenuation on wavelength. In this report, we proposed a variable PCF attenuator in which a bend was applied to the air hole decrement region in PCF optical attenuator fabricated by CO2 laser irradiation technique. It was demonstrated that the attenuation was increased by bending application to a PCF optical attenuator with 10.6dB attenuation at 1550nm-wavelength, where 2.9dB attenuation increment was obtained for 90° bending angle. |
