Increase and decrease of rapid changes in cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) of Ka-band satellite radio wave caused by thunderstorm events are investigated using the beacon signal (19.45GHz, right-hand circular polarization) of CS-3 and N-Star observed at 1 sec interval in Osaka Electro-Communication University, Neyagawa, Osaka, from 1990 to 1998. The tendency of observed rapid changes of XPD and cross-polar phases is consistently explained under the assumption of appropriate XPD and cross-polar phases due to the alignment and mean canting angles of ice crystals near the discharging point. The mean canting angles of ice crystals are shown to be increased up to near 90°before the discharges, more than 90% of them being decreased after the discharges. This phenomenon is more conspicuous at the middle stage of thunderstorm events corresponding to the matured stage. The increase of canting angles of ice crystals near the discharging point is found to be more enhanced in the inter-cloud lightning discharge that does not coincide with the time of cloud-to-ground discharges recorded near the observational location. Also, the increase of canting angles of ice crystals is predominant when the XPD values are decreased after the rapid changes. |
