Splitting of Break Arcs Being Magnetically Blown-out in 450VDC/20A Resistive Circuit

(in English) Silver contacts are separated at constant speed and break arcs are generated in a resistive circuit in air. Supply voltage is 200V-450V and circuit current is 10A or 20A. Transverse magnetic field of a permanent magnet is applied to the break arcs. A metal plate (iron, copper or aluminum) with different thicknesses (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0mm) is fixed on the top of the contact gap. Position of the metal plate is changed. The following results are shown. With the copper or aluminum plate, the break arcs are undivided. With the iron plate with thickness of 0.1mm, the break arcs are split just a few times of fifteen break operations at 250V/20A. A new cathode spot was generated on the lower edge of iron plate at arc splitting and moved upward on the plate surface. A new anode spot occurred at 3mm from the lower edge of the iron plate and moved upward on the plate surface.
