Word Identification in Adverse Listening Conditions by Japanese learners of English -- Role of Predictability --
Hinako Masuda (Seikei Univ.) EA2017-74
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Previous research has demonstrated that noisy listening environments make speech perception difficult even for native listeners, and the challenge is magnified when listeners are non-native learners of the language. The present paper reports the results of a perceptual experiment in which intermediate-level learners of English listened to predictable and non-predictable words in sentences in noisy and quiet listening environments. Results showed significant differences between accurate perception of predictable words in quiet and noisy conditions, as well as predictable and unpredictable words in quiet and noisy conditions. Further analyses found significant positive influence of TOEIC scores and experience of residing in English-speaking countries.
