A nonreciprocal phase shift (NPS) is useful for realizing a waveguide magneto-optical isolator. It is difficult to grow a single-crystalline magneto-optical garnet on a Si substrate owing to the difference in lattice constants. Thus, we have fabricated waveguide magneto-optical isolators using a magneto-optical garnet $CeY_2$$Fe_5$$O_12$ (Ce:YIG) on Si waveguides by a directly bonding method. However, with this structure, a NPS was provided only for the TM modes in vertically asymmetric waveguides fabricated. The NPS affected for both TE and TM modes, simultaneously, has not been realized yet.
In this paper, we propose an optical isolator fabricated with an amorphous silicon waveguide on a single-crystalline Ce:YIG. We discuss the design of a novel waveguide structure which provides an equal NPS for both TE and TM modes to realize a polarization-independent optical isolator. |
