Aphasia is a language disorder that negatively affects a person's ability to understand and generate language. Although the severity and scope of the problems are various depending on the extent of damage and the area of the brain affected, a symptom in almost all types of aphasia is difficulty recalling the name of objects, that is, “naming” problem. It has been said that patients in the chronic phase were no longer likely to recover their ability, highly frequent and continuous training seems to enable recovery according to a number of studies. Therefore, we have developed a naming practice application for a communication robot, Pepper, which enables highly frequent and continuous training. In this paper, the detailed functions of the communication robot therapy system, ActVoice for Pepper, are described. Some field trials more than one year at a hospital and at a patient’s home are also reported with the results that shows the communication robot therapy is effective to recover their naming ability even in the chronic phase. |
