(in English) When a speaker speaks and a listener listens to that speaker, extra-linguistic and environmental factors often degrade the quality of speech. This degradation, which is very common in our daily life, is always troublesome to non-native listeners. We developed a system that can modify an input clean speech sample into its variously degraded versions, which can be used for training learners to gain robust listening capabilities. In this research, robustness in listening is investigated and compared between learners and native speakers, where speech samples are modified so that the samples sound as if they are generated from very tall or very small speakers or they sound like air-traffic control communication. The above two kinds of speech are not used in previous studies investigating learners’ listening ability. The results clearly showed that significant weakness is found in learners.
