Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Attention plays an important role in perception and cognition of surround environments. Humans can attend to an individual speaker in the presence of other competing speakers and to segregate the target speech from all other sound sources, known as the cocktail-party effect. Whereas it is likely that auditory spatial attention is important factor of this phenomenon, it is not well understood how auditory spatial attention works to extract target speech from other competing speech. We investigated how the auditory spatial attention affects the listening performance in noisy environment. To examine the effects of auditory spatial attention quantitatively, word intelligibility was measured under following two conditions: (1) target speech sound presented at the expected location and (2) target speech sound presented at an unexpected location. Results showed that word intelligibility increased approximately 15 % when the target speech sound was presented at an expected location. Furthermore, word intelligibility is gradually decreased as the direction of the speech sound is away from the expected location. This spatial pattern would show to represent a spatial spread of the effects of auditory spatial attention.
