Nematic liquid crystals are widely used in optical devices such as liquid crystal displays. In this report, we propose a novel technique to control the orientation of nematic liquid crystals using ultrasound, and the variable-focus liquid crystal lens was developed by applying this technique. The ultrasonic liquid crystal lens was fabricated; a liquid crystal layer with the thickness of 50 um was sandwiched between two circular glass plates having an annular PZT transducer. By exciting the transducer, the flexural vibration modes were generated on the liquid crystal cell. The acoustic radiation force to the liquid crystal layer was generated, and the molecular orientation changed, resulting the drastic changes of the light transmission. The change of refractive index in the lens gives the variable-focus function. The distribution of the molecular orientation in the liquid crystal was predicted from the transmitted light intensities under the Crossed-Nicol condition, and the molecular orientation flowed out from the anti-nodal positions of the resonance flexural vibration of the glass plate. The focal point could be controlled by the applied voltage amplitude and the lens functioned as a variable-focus lens. |
