[Invited Talk] Materials Characterization by Electromagnetic Acoustic Resonance -- Physical Principle and Applications of EMATs --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Abstract The electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) can generate and detect ultrasonic waves in metals and piezomagnetic materials contactlessly. This non-contacting characteristic allows measurements for moving specimens and at elevated temperatures. However, the low transduction efficiency between the electromagnetic energy and mechanical energy has restricted EMAT applications. We then used EMATs for acoustic resonance methods, where the low transduction efficiency is compensated with the high S/N ratio of the resonance method, and the non-contacting measurement with EMAT avoids generation of the complicated resonance mode, involving the transducer and coupling material as well as the specimen. We call this method the EMAR (electromagnetic acoustic resonance). In this paper, I explain the fundamental principle of EMATs (the Lorentz-force and magnetostriction-force mechanisms) and show some applications of EMAR, including the non-destructive evaluations and elastic-constants measurements.
