Measurement of dynamic interfacial tension by shape analysis of flying droplets

(in English) We developed a method for simultaneous measurement of dynamic surface and interfacial tension in the time range from hundreds of microseconds to a few milliseconds. When two immiscible liquid droplets collide in midair, the equilibrium droplet shape after collision is determined by the balance of surface and interfacial tension and the volume of each droplet before collision. In particular, two droplets showing incomplete wetting will make an anisotropic shape, Daruma-shape, in which one droplet with higher surface tension covers the other droplet. In our method, microdroplets emitted by continuous inkjet system are obliquely collided, and by shape analysis of incompletely-wetting Daruma-shape flying droplets, the surface and interfacial tension which changes temporally as progress of surfactant adsorption can be observed. In this work, the measurements of dynamic surface and interfacial tension of surfactant (SDS, Tween 20, SDBS) aqueous solutions and hexadecane were successfully carried out.
