Development of Shared Base Station Supporting Millimeter Wave Bands for Network Sharing Scenario in 5G System

(in English) In the 5G and beyond cellular networks, micro-cells using mmW (millimeter Wave) bands will be densely deployed to en-hance communication speed and capacity. Meanwhile, mobile network operators are facing the significant challenge of how to realize ultra-dense micro-cell networks in a cost-effective manner. In the recently proposed and studied network sharing concept, network resources including BSs (Base Stations) are shared by multiple operators, resulting in significant cost reduc-tion. In this regard, shared BSs need to support various RATs (Radio Access Technologies) including mmW bands for provid-ing a variety of communication systems. In this study, we prototype and evaluate a shared BS supporting mmW bands based on the existing LTE system by applying the frequency conversion technology to the off-the-shelf LTE eNB (enhanced Node B).
