Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper presents terahertz hollow aperture antennas and its integration solutions suitable for THz short-range wireless communications system. For practical short-range THz wireless communications, a transceiver which is compact enough to be embedded inside mobiles is one of the key components. Then we show link budget calculation to estimate requirement of antenna gain for short-range wireless system. The issues in conventional THz antennas for wireless applications were discussed. Based on discussion, an axial post-wall waveguide (APW) for THz antenna and its integration solutions into THz transceiver were proposed. Next, we presents compact and high-efficiency horn antenna using axial post-wall laminated substrates in LTCC. The antenna provides 15-dBi antenna gain at 300 GHz and 26dB cross polarization discrimination for main beam. We present two packaging solutions for low-loss and wideband antenna-IC interconnection and 20-Gbps signal line embedded in LTCC. The package-integrated transition offers capability of hermetic sealing and 1-dB estimated loss with 36-GHz bandwidth with better than 10-dB return loss. Heterogeneously-integrated transition using a polyimide substrate offers 1-dB estimated loss with 49-GHz bandwidth with better than 10-dB return loss. On the basis of conventional lens module, the signal line embedded in lens LTCC package is designed and tested by wireless transmission experiment using an electronics-based transmitter, and results show that the module is applicable up to 27-Gbps signal.
